Customer Review: Excellent sharpener --- not sure it's worth extra

I bought this sharpening rod because of the description of hardened steel. You must point the tip on a block of wood and draw the blade downward using the guard section (on the handle) to line up 16 degrees. Usually, 20 degrees is what I use. I don't know how this is supposed to work. It worked okay but then what is the rest of the rod, about 2/3rds of the rod arc for? This section quickly smeared and required cleaning. The rod did a pretty good job on my old Marine Corps K-bar knife and a few other knives.
I am not sure this rod is anything special and $20 ones may be available that are just as good.
